FUNDAMENTALS OF FINDING ARTICLES

Ø      How to find periodical articles?

To find articles on your topic you must consult a periodical index

Ø      What's a periodical index?
Each of you might have used an index of some sort: most non-fiction books have one in the back. The index gives you listing of the topics covered in the book and directs you to the pages on which each topic is mentioned or discussed.

Using the same principle, a periodical index looks at the contents of many different magazines/journals/newspapers and refers users to specific issues with articles on the subjects listed.

This periodical index, especially the non-print format (CD-ROM, Online) is popularly known as 'database'. This database contains either

·         citation to articles, or

·         full-text/full-image articles

At UNITAR Library we have indexes/databases in online and CD-ROM format.

*   Due to licensing restrictions, access to some databases (except for free database) is restricted to UNITAR registered students/staff only. Users are required to enter their ID and password (the same ID and Password that you used to access VOISS) while attempting to access these databases.

Ø      What are the difference between the library catalogue (OPAC) and the periodical index?

YOU CANNOT SEARCH FOR PERIODICAL ARTICLES IN THE LIBRARY CATALOGUE. The Library catalogue is a listing of all items that library owns. It will tell you if the library subscribes to a particular journal, but it will not list out articles within those journals. Please bear in mind, at UNITAR Library you might not even find the title of the journal in our Library catalogue because we don't subscribe to the individual journal. We subscribe to a 'databases of journals' which consist of thousands of journals/magazines. Therefore, you need to use these databases to find any particular title.

Ø      Which database should I use?

The following list will help you choose databases to find articles on your topic. Click on the database name to be connected to the database. Please take note that you will need to key-in your ID and Password for those databases subscribed by UNITAR.
